I was down at Kathken Vineyards this weekend scoping out another source of Pinot. Ken is a really wild man, and his vines seem to reflect his character. Driving up the road past Chardonnay vines I was surprised to see the vine trunks growing 6 feet upwards, with the shoots hanging down. At the Pinot, in the Pommard rows, he had the vines split on a double trellis system, with a wide spacing of about 10 x 6 feet. The vines were again sending up huge masses of untrimmed shoots, the whole scene looking quite wild.
